Lucy dressed up for school today. She took fortune cookies to all her friends, and her book about Chinese New Year. We will celebrate with our Chinese group and family this coming Saturday with dinner and the Dragon Dance!
~I made a "Gung hay fat choy" banner and hung it up, and I kept saying it to Lucy, and she just kept looking at me like she had NO idea what I was saying....SO I finally figured out that "Gung hay fat choy" is Cantonese, and Lucy knows Mandarin. Once I figured out how to pronounce "Xin Nian Kuai Le" she smiled and grabbed her cup of tea for "Gambe" (cheers)! ...yes, Lucy LOVES green tea and drinks it almost everyday!
~Xin Nian Kuai Le to our little China girl~
Happy CNY!!

The fortune cookies and the Chinese New Years book is such a great idea for Lucy's class.
ReplyDeleteHappy Chinese New Year! Enjoy the celebrations.
Awww Lucy looks so cute. I love how you did her hair too:) I too learned that I made my banner in the Cantonese way of saying it. I guess it is more popularized even though our girls heard/know Mandarin. I love that Lucy shared with her class. Kate will be wearing her fancy Chinese clothes to pre-school tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteHappy CNY!
We've got both -- native Cantonese and Mandarin girls here and I have to say that "Gung Hay Fat Choy" is easier for me to say, so that's what I'm wishing you!
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm so lazy!

ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh, because I said the same thing to my husband (who speaks mandarin)--- and he told me that it means nothing in Mandarin. Now I know he was right! Xin Nian Kuai Le to your family too. Those pictures are just so cute.

That is so sweet that she still knows some of her native language... I hope she doesn't lose that... so cute she took fortune cookies...
ReplyDeleteYep--"Gung Hay Fat Choy" is the Cantonese translation, and "Xin Nian Kuai Le" is the Mandarin. However, the Cantonese version is more popularized because Chinese immigrants in the United States are mostly from southern China, where Cantonese is widely spoken.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I love your blog! ^.^ This is coming from a random passerby who loves seeing the bond your family members have with each other.
Have a nice day!
